Roderick has practised as a barrister since 1993, mostly as an independent barrister in Chambers, with a lengthy period at Pump Court Chambers in London, where he led the Employment Team. He set up his own Chambers in 2017. In addition to employment litigation, professional regulation and the financial aspects of family law, he has specialised in the racing and bloodstock industries.
He was consulted as part of the Quinlan Review into the independence of the BHA Panels in 2016, which consultation led to the re-building of the Panels. He has advised and represented stake-holders in consultations about the re-writing of the Rules of Racing.
Over the last decade, he has dealt with every kind of racing regulatory matter, and has appeared in some of the most significant regulatory cases within the sport, including cases concerning:
• running and riding
• doping
• bullying/harassment between jockeys and bringing racing into disrepute
• horse welfare
• lay betting and integrity
As well as racing regulatory work, he is regularly instructed in private disputes between racing’s participants and stake-holders. He has been a horseman all his life, and regularly stewards at point-to-point race meetings.
He remains in practice at the Bar, and does not provide legal services through GVS EQ, but is an Associate of GVS EQ for the provision of non-legal consultancy.
